On Saturday, 7 June, Bert & Gert’s will be launching their popular ‘Arts, Crafts and Vintage’ Market at the Crown Glass Shopping Centre, Nailsea.
Taking place on the first Saturday of every month, the new Bert & Gert’s Market will reinforce the popular markets already well established in the Centre – the more traditional Tuesday Market, where stalls sell fruit and veg, cakes and bread and clothing to the Nailsea Farmers’ Market – now in its 6th year and which takes place on the third Saturday of every month selling wide range of local produce from organic meat, fruit and veg to gluten free cakes and the new stalls selling cider and fine ales.
Also on the third Saturday of the month, there is the Craft Market selling a variety of local crafts from jewellery and bags; cards and pictures to wood products and the Community Market, open to individuals, charity groups or organisations and small businesses wanting to either sell their produce, to promote their cause or raise funds and their profile.
“Bert & Gert’s craft market is a great opportunity for our Nailsea shoppers to discover a range of vintage and crafts, gifts and fashions drawn from specialist designers and collectors throughout the South West,” says Charlotte Jarrett, Centre Manager, Crown Glass Shopping Centre. “Our Community and Farmers markets already attract a loyal and enthusiastic following and the Bert and Gert’s Markets will offer even more choice, showcasing a range of original and unique ideas which will add even more variety to the retail offer in Nailsea.”
Started through a love of arts and crafts, Bert and Gert’s is run by Birmingham based brothers Mark and Jason Wilkes. Started in 2012, Bert & Gert’s now operate in four locations in Birmingham, Southampton, Andover and Nailsea.
Bert and Gert’s is a family business with a family name. Bert being Mark and Jason’s paternal grandfather and Gert being their maternal grandmother. Their aim is to support, encourage and promote small, local businesses and to bring arts, crafts and vintage to a wider audience by working in partnership with their host venues and local artists and crafter’s.
“Our events have a community feel, all the traders are supportive of each other and we want to give them the opportunity to grow their hobbies and passions in to successful sustainable businesses”.
Their partners include shopping centres, Local Authorities, and Business Improvement Districts, working together to the benefit of the venues, traders and the local community to bring new opportunities to the High Street. Bert and Gert’s will not only target local north Somerset traders but will also look to bring their existing traders from other nationwide markets to introduce new business into the local economy.
The new market is also being supported by Nailsea Town Council. Ian Morrell, Town Clerk, said “The Town Council is keen to support initiatives to increase the range of retail activity in the town and hopes that the Bert and Gerts market will build on the success of the monthly Farmer and Community markets.”
At Crown Glass Shopping Centre, Nailsea, Bert & Gert’s Arts, Crafts & Vintage Market will be launching with ‘My Secret Kitchen’ and ‘Forever Living; as well as stalls selling jewellery, bags and preserves.
