Mother's Day Portrait Competition

Mother's Day Portrait Competition

Crown Glass Shopping Centre in Nailsea has invited children from twenty local schools to create a portrait of their Mother for Mother’s Day.

The children can portray their mum in whatever materials they like – felt tips, paint, crayon, collage or even computer generated – and to help them, their class teacher has been sent a Teacher’s Project Pack and A1 poster highlighting some of the more famous portraits created by well known artists over the years.

“Somerset has been home to several famous painters over the years,” says Charlotte Jarrett, Manager of the Crown Glass Shopping Centre. “Shenda Amery was chosen to sculpt the busts of two sitting Prime Ministers – Margaret Thatcher and John Major and paint the portrait of Tony Blair; English Watercolourist Thomas Leeson Scrase Rowbotham, was born in Bath as was John Maggs, who was known for his coaching scenes. Who knows,” continues Charlotte, “perhaps one of the children entering our competition may, one day, go on to become a famous artist too.”
The closing date for entries is Wednesday, 12 March when the portraits will be judged and the best entries displayed in the Centre.

Prizes will be awarded in three age categories – 5-7, 8-11 and 12-17 with each winner receiving a £25.00 gift voucher for themselves and a Gift Box for their Mother. Their original portraits will be framed as a very personal gift for Mother’s Day.

“We will also upload all the portraits onto our Facebook page so that everyone can see how talented the children are,” continues Charlotte.
“This very public display of affection can be viewed from Tuesday, 18 March. The six portraits with the most combined likes and shares by 9am on Thursday, 27 March will have their portraits framed and we will choose one of these six to win a £25.00 gift voucher. Finally, we will donate £100.00 to the school submitting the best overall entries – possibly for buying more art materials.”

The competition is open to all local children between the ages of 5 and 17 and entry forms are available from the Crown Glass Shopping Centre by calling 01275 854543.
